A finely cast Chinese bronze figure depicting Zhang Guolao, one of the Eight Immortals of Daoist tradition, seated upon a donkey while studying a scroll. Executed with elegant simplicity, the immortal is rendered in flowing robes and a broad scholar's hat, while the donkey is portrayed with a lowered head and elongated proportions that lend the composition a quiet, contemplative character.
The bronze retains traces of its original gilded surface, now softened by decades of handling and natural wear. These remnants of parcel gilding create a rich interplay of warm gold and dark patina across the figure, highlighting the sculptural modeling and lending the piece considerable visual depth.
Mounted on a custom hardwood display stand, the sculpture possesses the refined presence associated with Chinese scholar's objects and cabinet bronzes. Equally appealing to collectors of Asian art and designers seeking a distinctive decorative accent, the piece displays beautifully on a bookshelf, console, desk, or within a curated collection of Chinese works of art.

COLLECTOR'S NOTE
Zhang Guolao is one of the most recognizable members of the Eight Immortals, legendary Daoist figures celebrated in Chinese art and folklore for centuries. He is traditionally portrayed as an elderly scholar traveling with his donkey, a symbol of wisdom, longevity, and detachment from worldly ambition. Images of Zhang Guolao became especially popular during the late Qing and Republic periods, when themes drawn from classical literature and Daoist tradition frequently appeared in scholar's objects and decorative arts.
Historically, Zhang Guolao is often depicted riding his donkey backward, a reference to the immortal's unconventional wisdom and supernatural powers. In this example, however, he rides forward while studying a scroll. Such variations are not unusual, as Republic-period decorative bronzes often adapted traditional iconography for both domestic decorative use and the export market.
The lowered head of the donkey and the scholar's absorbed posture create a sense of calm reflection. It is a piece that reflects the enduring admiration for scholarship, introspection, and the ideal of a life lived in harmony with nature.
