item :
a refined small pair of busts in the finest hard-paste porcelain, glazed and polychrome, entirely hand-painted with a meticulous brush technique. Both works are signed under the base with the famous underglaze blue mark of the imperial manufactory of vienna, depicting the heraldic shield. Just below this , we've included photos with some historical information about this manufacturer, taken from our encyclopedic volume on european porcelain. The numerous marks used by the manufacturer are also included, including ours, the number 11, in underglaze blue, used between 1820 and 1827. The pair's authenticity and age are confirmed by a clear, natural patina, particularly visible under the sculptures' bases. The freehand decorative details are of extraordinary craftsmanship, particularly the delicate geometric and floral motifs on the girls' bonnets, defined brushstroke by brushstroke, along with the masterful rendering of the tassels and terminal plumes. The original model for these sculptures was designed in the second half of the 18th century by the renowned master modeler johann joachim kändler for the german meissen manufactory; the subject was so successful that it was revived by the most prestigious european manufacturers in the early decades of the 19th century, including, as in the case of this splendid pair, the imperial manufactory of vienna.
information on the artist and/or manufacturer:
the imperial vienna porcelain manufactory operated from 1718 to 1864. Established in the wake of the success of the meissen manufactory, in 1718 it received an exclusive privilege from emperor charles vi of habsburg, granted to claudius innocentius du paquier for a period of twenty-five years. For this reason, it is historically recognized as the second oldest hard-paste porcelain manufacturer in europe. Viennese artifacts have achieved significant sales at major international auction houses and are now exhibited in the world's most prestigious museums, from the mak in vienna to the metropolitan museum in new york.
