An Extremely Attractive And Very Fine Quality Late 18th Century Mahogany Hepplewhite Period Georgian Mahogany Open Armchair, Or Salon Chair, The Upholstered Oval Back Set Within Richly Carved Moulded Border, with Elegant Scrolling Arms And Padded Seat, Raised On Extremely Elegant Carved Cabriole Legs To Front And Swept Legs To The Rear.
This is an incredibly elegant 18th century armchair, of relatively typical attractive form, however it is much better quality than most and boasts some quite exceptional carved decoration throughout.
Originally made as one of many additional side chairs in one of the salons of a house, it will have served many a different purpose throughout the years. Its incredible elegance, when taken in combination with its ability to be so versatile in terms of its use means that it would be perfect as a desk chair, a hall chair, a bedroom side chair and many other uses.
The mahogany timbers which have been used in its construction are of good high grade and therefore the carved decoration is crisp and detailed, giving the chair real sophistication and elegance.
Overall the condition is very good with no major structural defects to be concerned with and just the usual historic marks, scuffs and scrapes which blend into the surface now. The upholstery is in relatively good condition and is very nice fabric, but has clearly been in place for a while and there are a few old marks and very minor small spot type stains upon close inspection, none that are immediately obvious and aesthetically displeasing though. It would of course be a relatively simple job to have the fabric covering changed by an upholsterer should the purchaser so wish.
As with all items which we offer for sale this armchair has been inspected and attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish to ensure it is ready for immediate placement upon purchase.
