Each with a barrel back … Read more Fine pair of Russian Empire Style Carved Mahogany Bergère Armchairs, probably St. Petersburg, circa 1820-1830. Each with a barrel back surmounted by a richly carved acanthus and lyre crest, deep-winged carved crest rail and scrolling arms terminating in a finely carved eagle’s head, tapered front legs ending in cast gilt bronze paw feet, later upholstered in blue leather and accented with brass nailhead trim. Seams in the crest rail indicate the chairs were built from multiple pieces of solid wood with slight shrinkage over the last two centuries. The joinery is of period and the patina is of a rich hand finish. This handsome pair is of the neoclassical style that flourished during the reign of Tsar Alexander I (1801-1825).

While conceived as formal seating in the grand Russian imperial interiors, these magnificent Bergères adapt beautifully to today’s interiors. Their commanding architectural form and timeless Classical design allow them to complement both traditional and thoughtfully curated contemporary homes. Good antique condition with expected age-related wear to the carved mahogany frame, light surface abrasions and finish wear consistent with age. Minor localized loss and chipping of the carved mahogany surrounding the upholstery nailhead trim on one chair. This damage is confined to the carved border and does not compromise the chair’s structural integrity. Leather upholstery is more recent and in good condition. See less
