A striking example of Danish studio ceramics, this large handcrafted stoneware bowl by acclaimed ceramic artist Inger Rokkjær showcases the organic beauty and spontaneity of the raku-firing process. The substantial vessel features a warm honey-ochre glaze accented by a rhythmic field of impressed spiral motifs that wrap around the exterior, creating a tactile surface rich with visual depth and movement. The raku firing has produced subtle variations in tone, delicate smoky markings, and natural speckling throughout the glaze, giving the piece a unique character that cannot be replicated. Its clean cylindrical form reflects the understated elegance of Danish Modern design, while the textured decoration introduces a sculptural presence that makes the bowl equally compelling as a functional object or decorative centerpiece. Balancing refined craftsmanship with an earthy aesthetic, this one-of-a-kind work embodies Rokkjær’s distinctive approach to ceramic art and the enduring appeal of Scandinavian studio pottery. Signed "IR / 2003" underneath. Born in 1934, Inger Rokkjær studied at the Jutland Academy of Fine Arts in Århus from 1965 to 1970, where one of her tutors was Gutte Eriksen. She set up her own workshop in 1969, and later returned to the Academy to teach from 1982 until 1986. "Throughout her career Inger Rokkjær has continued to pursue the mysteries of the lidded jar. The lid conceals the secrets held within the rim and the interior of the vessel. Bowls, teabowls and cylinders also enter her vocabulary, all demonstrating her continual pursuit of form, texture and colour through the traditional process of Raku firing\.An original translation of Raku denotes 'happiness', a lightness of spirit which pervades Inger’s works" --Margaret O'Rorke, courtesy of Galerie Besson.
