A monumental 19th century black painted cabinet of impressive architectural scale, later decorated with richly raised chinoiserie ornament in warm gilt, ochre, and gold-toned relief. The two-part case is composed of a broad lower cupboard and a taller upper cabinet, surmounted by a shaped arched crest, molded cornice, paneled doors, and a substantial plinth base. The exterior is decorated throughout with elaborate chinoiserie landscape vignettes, including pagodas, pavilions, bridges, boats, willows, palm-like trees, flowering branches, rocky islands, garden figures, and stylized architectural scenes. The later decoration is notably raised rather than simply painted, giving the chinoiserie scenes a tactile dimensional quality and creating a dramatic contrast against the black lacquered and painted surface.
The cabinet is especially distinguished by its sophisticated folding door arrangement. The upper doors open in sections, allowing the cabinet to be displayed with one decorated panel visible on each side even when the interior is open. This creates a highly decorative presentation in both closed and open positions, making the piece equally effective as a display cabinet, bookcase, bar cabinet, linen press, dining room cupboard, or statement storage piece. The interior is fitted with adjustable shelves, offering practical flexibility while preserving the formal presence of the case. The lower section opens separately and continues the raised chinoiserie decoration across the paneled cupboard doors, unifying the upper and lower registers into a single commanding composition. Both original keys are present.
Combining 19th century cabinetmaking with later chinoiserie revival decoration, this cabinet has the presence of a grand European japanned or lacquered cabinet while retaining a highly functional shelved interior. Its black painted finish, raised gilt decoration, arched crest, folding paneled doors, adjustable shelves, pagoda landscapes, Asian-inspired garden scenes, and dramatic two-part form make it a striking focal point for a library, dining room, entrance hall, collector’s interior, or gallery setting.
