A rare and highly sculptural George Jones majolica faux bois garden seat or drinks table, modeled as entwined tree trunks with climbing vines, rope-twist detail and the distinctive mottled brown and green undersurface seen on documented Jones examples.
The circular glossy top resembles a cut tree section, while it displays the distinctive mottled glazed surface associated with George Jones production. The colors are rich - shades of green, brown, ochre, and amber.
The top is supported by three tree-trunk uprights rising from a shaped base. The exceptional glazing accentuates the modeled details throughout, from the deeply textured bark to the curling vines and grape clusters concealed beneath the top.
Highly decorative yet fully functional, this piece is perfect as a drinks table, a sculptural accent in a garden room, conservatory, or any interior where naturalistic design shines. It also works beautifully as a garden seat or plant stand.
The underside bears the George Jones and Sons crescent monogram together with pattern number 1450. The crescent mark was introduced following the addition of George Jones's sons to the company in 1878, supporting a date of manufacture shortly thereafter.
George Jones was among the leading English majolica manufacturers of the Victorian period, celebrated for imaginative naturalistic forms and richly colored glazes. This example is particularly desirable for its unusual faux bois design, combining rustic charm with the excellence for which the firm is renowned.
England Circa 1878.
