Designed … Read more This rare set of six R.J.C. folding chairs by René-Jean Caillette represents the absolute pinnacle of French post-modern minimalism. Designed in 1986 for the prestigious VIA (Valorisation de l'Innovation dans l'Ameublement), this set sits at the zenith of structural economy, transforming a utilitarian object into a sculptural statement. What elevates this set from mere furniture to high-end collectible design is its intentional duality. The lacquered M.D.F. (mid-density fiberboard) backrests and seats feature a clever reversible engineering that with a flip, you can transition the chairs from all natural to all black or mixed. The frames are composed of a fluid ribbon of triple-chromed steel wire. Finding a single or a pair of these chairs is a challenge; securing a set of six is a true market rarity.

The R.J.C. folding chair emerged as a prominent piece of the 1980s "M.D.F. revival." An historic example of its era, it is preserved today in the permanent collection of the Musée National d'Art Moderne at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. See less
