Offered is a 1950s-1960s hand woven Indonesian Sumba Island Hinggi Textile with hand knotted fringe. It's a thick cotton with a deep indigo base on natural ecru and a deep cornflower blue accent. Ikat is the process where textiles are hand painted on the warp and the weft to create the patterns and designs as they are being woven - no 2 pieces are identical. The Hinggi is a ceremonial shawl, and Sumba island natives sometimes wear them wrapped around the waist as sarongs. This piece has a tribal motif and elaborate scrolls. In traditional Indonesian hinggi textiles from Sumba, the decorative, woven border used to secure the warp threads and separate the main cloth from the flowing fringes is called a kabakil, which serves as both a structural anchor and a symbolic element in Sumbanese weaving: This piece would be stunning as a wall hanging or perfect as a runner over a console.
The textile measures 14.5" wide, 64" long , and 70" long when fringe included.

The nature of the irate weaving process means some of the color is uneven, but no part that is very noticeable - see detailed images. We suggest professional dry cleaning, or hand washing in cold water with gentle soap if textile expert. Any wear is commensurate with use. less
