Pablo Picasso ( 1881 - 1973 ) was a Spanish born painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, poet and playwright who spent most of his life in France. He is regarded as one of the most important and influential artists of The Twentieth Century. Exceptionally prolific throughout the course of his long life, Picasso achieved universal renown and immense fortune for his revolutionary artistic accomplishments, and became one of the most well known figures in 20th Century Art.
The venerable famous printing house of Imprimerie Mourlot Paris was founded in 1852 by The Mourlot Family. It is known worldwide for its fine art lithography printing, and one of their most important contributions was to be the art poster. Mourlot became the place where posters were prepared and produced as works of art in their own right. The artist Picasso and Atelier Mourlot together would create many important fine art prints and art posters.
Beginning in the 1930's Fernand Mourlot invited the major master artists of the time into the lithography studio to learn the medium of printing together. Encouraging the artists to work directly on the lithography plates to create original prints and posters in limited editions. The results of this artistic collaboration between master artists and Mourlot became internationally known for their originality, beauty, and exquisite craftsmanship.
Curt Valentin ( 1902 - 1954 ) was a German-Jewish art dealer known for handling Modern Art, particularly classified as " degenerate " during the Nazi regime. His promising career in Berlin was cut short when antisemitic laws prevented Jews from practicing their professions in Germany. He then emigrated to New York maintaining his European art market relationships, establishing his New York gallery where he became an important conduit of European Modernism in Postwar New York, and helped build some of the most significant collections of Modern Art in The United States.
Valentin exhibited the artworks of an impressive list of Modern Masters including Max Beckmann, Juan Gris, paul Klee, Franz Marc, Pablo Picasso, Jean Arp, Alexander Calder, Henry Moore, Marino Marini, Jacques Lipchitz, and Marc Chagall among many others.
