Allen was known for wheel-thrown or hand built stoneware vases, mugs, lamp stands, and lidded vessels. Several forms are either functional domestic ware or at times sculptural and some are typically decorated with geometric patterns, made with multiple glazes or stains and bear the influences he came to enlist in his pieces.
Sgraffito (Italian for "scratched") is an ancient decorative art technique where a surface layer of one color is scratched or carved away to reveal a contrasting color underneath, creating patterns in pottery, murals (using layered plaster), and even on glass or painted surfaces. In pottery, it involves applying slip or underglaze to leather-hard clay and then etching designs into it to show the natural clay body, resulting in bold, graphic designs popular since the Renaissance and used globally in various art forms
