A distinguished example of American mid-century modernist furniture design, this ebonized mahogany round extension dining table is attributed to Paul T. Frankl, produced by Johnson Furniture Company of Grand Rapids and retailed through John Stuart, Inc. The design is entirely consistent with Frankl’s mature design language of the 1950s — a vocabulary that bridged Art Deco sophistication with the clean modernist ethos of the postwar era — and is closely comparable to documented examples bearing confirmed attribution. Genuine mahogany construction is certified by the original Mahogany Association label present on the underside.
The base is the defining statement. An architectural composition of paired vertical posts connected by dramatically sweeping curved arch members, all executed in deeply ebonized mahogany, the base reads as both geometric and sculptural — a form that asserts itself without competing with the generous round top above. In its confidence and architectural resolution, it is precisely the kind of design thinking associated with Frankl’s best work for Johnson Furniture during this period.
The top is round in its closed configuration and extends to a generous oval with the addition of leaves, finished in the same deep ebonized mahogany throughout. The result is a table of complete visual coherence from every angle. Age-appropriate surface wear is consistent with the table’s vintage; the base presents in exceptional condition.
Attribution is based on close visual and structural comparison with documented examples. Dimensions and leaf count to be confirmed by seller.
