An authentic late 19th-century Victorian chromolithograph depicting three beloved lap dogs gathered around an ornate silver platter in an elegant interior setting. The charming composition features three distinct companion dogs seated upon an Oriental-style carpet against richly draped curtains and decorative wallpaper, reflecting the Victorian era’s fascination with domestic pet portraiture.
The print retains its period wooden frame and displays a visible copyright inscription reading:
“Copyright 1875 by G. F. Gilman.”
During examination and cleaning, an original issue of The Daily Picayune (New Orleans), dated April 28, 1898, was discovered behind the artwork and preserved. This newspaper had been used as backing material during an early framing or re-framing and provides a fascinating glimpse into the object’s documented history.
The newspaper includes front-page coverage of the opening days of the Spanish-American War, adding an unusual historical element to the piece’s provenance.
A wonderful decorative and conversational artwork well suited for Victorian, English Traditional, library, study, cottage, or eclectic interiors.
