This exceptional large-scale Japanese patchwork textile, beautifully framed under glass, is a striking example of the centuries-old tradition of Yosegire—the art of assembling remnants of fine fabrics into a harmonious decorative composition.
Created from an intricate arrangement of irregular silk and textile fragments, the work features richly colored fabrics, embroidered floral details, brocades, satins, and patterned weaves arranged in an asymmetrical composition. All of the flowers are made with intricate, three-dimensional velvet. The layered textures and handwork create remarkable visual depth while celebrating the Japanese aesthetic appreciation for craftsmanship, reuse, and beauty found in imperfection.
The tradition of Yosegire dates back to Japan's Edo period, when textile remnants were carefully preserved and incorporated into garments, screens, and decorative objects. This approach later influenced the Western "Crazy Quilt" movement of the late 19th century, which embraced similar asymmetrical patchwork and decorative embroidery techniques.
Presented in a custom black frame under plexiglass, this monumental textile functions as a dramatic piece of wall art and would complement Japandi, Wabi-Sabi, Asian-inspired, eclectic, maximalist, and contemporary interiors alike.
Acquired from a private collection and believed to have been purchased in 1945. Consultation with the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum suggests the work may represent either a Japanese Yosegire textile tradition or an early 20th-century Japanese-influenced patchwork composition.
