Dimensions: height 45.5 cm, width 31.5 cm, depth 2 cm.

This wooden printing block, known as a hangi, was carved in mirror image so that the text would appear correctly when printed. The inscription reads Yamashiro no kuni Ujitawara, Nishide Seicha, referring to a tea producer from Ujitawara, an area closely connected to Japanese tea culture and the production of Uji tea.

The powerful calligraphy, deep black ink residue and visible carving marks give the object an exceptional graphic presence. Around the carved characters, clear traces of use can be seen, created by the repeated inking and printing of the block. It was most likely used for commercial material, packaging, wooden crates, cloths or labels within the tea trade.

Today, this printing block is a remarkable collector’s object with strong historical and visual value. Its sculptural form, aged wood and bold typography make it a unique eyecatcher on the wall or a striking statement piece in a sober, minimalist or Japanese-inspired interior.
