A captivating modernist tripod side chair designed by the legendary French-Swiss design duo Adrien Audoux and Frida Minet.
Handcrafted in the South of France during the 1950s, this chair perfectly reflects the rustic, coastal avant-garde style born along the Côte d’Azur. It offers a striking graphic silhouette that effortlessly anchors any mid-century modern or contemporary space.
As prominent members of the Union des Artistes Modernes (UAM)—alongside icons like Charlotte Perriand and Louis Sognot—Audoux and Minet actively rejected the opulent, exotic materials favored by the traditional Parisian elite. Operating out of their coastal workshop in Golfe-Juan, they embraced a philosophy of poetic functionalism. They utilized humble, locally sourced organic materials to create avant-garde, everyday masterpieces. This specific design showcases their resourceful brilliance. The sculptural, deep-toned tripod base is masterfully re-purposed from oak wine barrel staves. This sturdy structural woodwork creates a beautiful contrast against the golden, hand-woven abaca hemp cord seat and backrest.
With its minimalist frame and rich, tactile surfaces, this chair serves as a sculptural statement. It is ideal as an eye-catching accent piece in a coastal-inspired living room, a layered bohemian den, or standing alone next to an entry console. Its graphic contours and warm, sun-baked earth tones bring an immediate sense of relaxed French Riviera sophistication to any collection.
