This fascinating collection displays three distinct elephant miniatures intricately hand-carved of boxwood (Tsuge) in traditional forms of netsuke. A fourth elephant, carved in red jasper and devoid of cord holes, has joined this collection. It not uncommon for such similar-looking collectibles to get mixed up over the years due to their matching size, color and subject matter.
The three netsuke pieces showcase the hallmark tight grain, rich warm amber tone and subtle surface polish typical of finely carved boxwood. This wood is highly prized by carvers because its density allows for sharp detail without splintering. The variations in color and darker recesses indicate handling and age, which natural boxwood acquires over time. Small, glossy, black glass beads or polished synthetic pins make up the eyes. Additionally, cord holes (Himotoshi), as seen here, are a critical feature of authentic netsukes, which are designed to serve as clothing toggles for Japanese garments.
In East Asian art, the elephant represents wisdom, strength, patience and supreme good fortune. This collection of four elephants captures a dynamic progression of movement from left to right: The Acrobat: The first elephant balances playfully on the Tied Sack (Fukuro). In East Asian folklore, a large sack represents stored wealth, abundance and the gathering of good fortune, bringing a wealth of blessings into the home. The perfectly smooth, round sphere held high in the trunk represents a sacred, wish-granting jewel or flaming pearl, which signifies spiritual clarity, wisdom, and supremacy over obstacles. The combination expresses ultimate prosperity and spiritual wisdom.
The Trumpeting Herald: Standing firmly with its stone trunk raised straight up, this pose is a universal symbol for calling in prosperity, wealth, and positive energy.
The Recumbent Bovine Style: This figure is tightly curled forward, bowing its head toward its front feet. This posture reflects humility, deep meditation, and inner peace.
The Walking Calf: A classic, naturalistic depiction of a smaller elephant strolling peacefully, symbolizing longevity and steady, safe progress through life.
Take the whole set home to enhance your prospects and celebrate your blessings.
