A fourth … Read more This fascinating collection displays three distinct elephant miniatures intricately hand-carved of boxwood (Tsuge) in traditional forms of netsuke. A fourth elephant, carved in red jasper and devoid of cord holes, has joined this collection. It not uncommon for such similar-looking collectibles to get mixed up over the years due to their matching size, color and subject matter.
The three netsuke pieces showcase the hallmark tight grain, rich warm amber tone and subtle surface polish typical of finely carved boxwood. This wood is highly prized by carvers because its density allows for sharp detail without splintering. The variations in color and darker recesses indicate handling and age, which natural boxwood acquires over time. Small, glossy, black glass beads or polished synthetic pins make up the eyes. Additionally, cord holes (Himotoshi), as seen here, are a critical feature of authentic netsukes, which are designed to serve as clothing toggles for Japanese garments.
