Executed … Read more This elegant antique French commode Bordelaise, also known as a commode tombeau, was crafted in Bordeaux, France, circa 1750. Executed in richly figured walnut, the chest embodies the refined craftsmanship and graceful proportions associated with the Louis XV period in southwestern France. The serpentine façade and pronounced bombé sides create a sculptural silhouette, while the shaped top and flowing cabriole feet lend the piece a sense of movement and balance.
The commode features three spacious drawers, each adorned with deeply molded rocaille cartouches and intricate scrolling carvings characteristic of the Bordelais region. The drawers retain their original bronze pulls and escutcheons, adding warmth and authenticity to the façade. Fine hand-cut dovetail construction is visible throughout, highlighting the quality of the cabinetmaker’s work.
