Their delicate silk exteriors over gilt wood indicate they were meant for clean, luxury indoor storage, likely as high-end storage canisters, vanity boxes, or hat boxes, while serving as sophisticated decorative accents for a wealthy home.
With two per canister, the embroidered panels are classic examples of late 19th-century to early 20th-century (Late Qing Dynasty or Republic Period) Chinese embroidery. They feature traditional "Birds and Flowers" (huaniao) motifs. The panels depict pairs of birds, peonies (symbolizing prosperity and honor), and narcissus/daffodils (symbolizing good fortune and prosperity for the New Year). These panels are applied directly to a gold-painted, cylindrical frame, a popular technique for items crafted in Canton (Guangzhou) specifically for the Western luxury export market.
The patches feature fine silk satin stitching and forbidden stitch work. They display beautifully shaded threads to give the birds' feathers and flower petals’ realistic depth. Each embroidered scene is framed by an applied woven ribbon border with distinctive Greek-key or fretwork-inspired patterns.
The silk shows realistic signs of oxidation, foxing, and color fading. The exterior wood surface hosting the patches has developed a deep, mottled golden-brown patina from handling and light exposure over many decades. Textile-covered bases. Sold as a pair only.
