A highly collectible late‑19th to early‑20th‑century European porcelain apothecary jar labeled “CHLORET. COCAIC. +++”, the Latin pharmaceutical abbreviation for Cocainum Chloratum — cocaine hydrochloride. In the late 19th century, cocaine hydrochloride was widely used in legitimate medicine as a potent topical anesthetic, particularly for surgeries involving the eye, nose, and throat. It was also a common ingredient in patent medicines and tonics before the substance became strictly regulated and illegal for non-medical use in the early 20th century.
This example features clear lettering, strong gilt bands, and a clean white glaze. The original lid is no longer present, but the jar displays beautifully and reads clearly from a distance. Ideal for curiosity cabinets, antique pharmacy displays, or graphic decorative shelving.
