Maurice-Paul Chevallier (1892–1987) was head decorator for the Longwy factory from April 1925 until September 30, 1972—one of the longest documented careers at the factory. He took over as artistic director in 1931 and notably created the famous spherical vases, including the "Colonial Sphere," which won an award at the 1931 Paris Colonial Exposition. His signature is one of the most sought-after in Longwy production.
The presence of his name on the stamp of this dish, along with the inscription "Longwy Enamels Renaissance France," places the piece within the factory's post-war production.
This large oval dish with a flat rim features a composition in two distinct registers. The background is finished in deep midnight blue enamel, onto which a border of stylized geometric and floral motifs is applied in cream enamel highlighted with gold—arabesques, lancets, and turquoise and orange florets—in a distinctly Orientalist style, reminiscent of Iznik enamel. The central medallion, in cream enamel with a fine crackled background, features a dense polychrome bouquet: pink peonies, red and blue dahlias, daisies and bellflowers, and green foliage—executed with the characteristic precision of Longwy cloisonné, each motif outlined with a line of slip. The entire piece is highlighted with gold in the kiln on the border's partitions.
The 3572 form is documented under the base, along with the circular stamp "Émaux de Longwy Renaissance France / Décor de M.P. Chevallier" and the deposit stamp "Millandri Frères Dieulouard Made in France." This piece has an attribution mark,
