The work is based on the celebrated horsemanship teachings of William Cavendish, Duke of Newcastle, one of the most influential riding masters of the seventeenth century and a central figure in the development of classical dressage in Europe. The engraving depicts an advanced dressage training exercise known as “Courbettes en arrière sur les voltes à gauche,” illustrating a horse performing controlled courbette movements while being trained around a central post by elegantly dressed riding masters and assistants. The composition beautifully captures the discipline, precision, and theatrical elegance associated with aristocratic riding academies during the Baroque period. Rendered with fine hand-coloring, the engraving possesses exceptional charm and visual appeal. The carefully observed horse anatomy, flowing tack, and richly dressed attendants reflect the prestige of courtly horsemanship at the height of European equestrian culture. Newcastle’s riding manuals became enormously influential among noble courts and military riding schools throughout Europe, and engravings such as this remain among the most desirable early depictions of classical dressage training. The print displays beautifully as both an important equestrian document and an elegant decorative artwork. Its refined eighteenth-century coloring and balanced composition make it particularly suitable for libraries, studies, country houses, riding schools, and interiors dedicated to equestrian history and sporting art. It displays exceptionally well in dark walnut, ebonized, or lightly gilt frames combined with warm ivory or parchment-toned mats. This is an original engraving printed around 1700, not a modern reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The engraving is sold unframed; any framed images shown are for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale. Condition: Good overall condition with age-related toning, light scattered foxing, a visible center fold as issued, and minor wear to the sheet edges consistent with age. Framing tips: Displays exceptionally well in dark walnut, museum black, or lightly gilt frames with a generous ivory mat, complementing the warm hand-coloring and refined Baroque character of the engraving.
