A chic pair of genuine labeled cantilevered 'Paulistano' lounge chairs in optional leather and chromed steel designed by Paulo Mendes da Rocha (Brazil 1928-2021) and produced by Objekto in France. Designed in 1957 for the Clube Atlético Paulistano in São Paulo, Brazil, the Paulistano chairs are crafted with a continuous 17 foot long polished chrome tubular steel frame in a cantilever sled configuration, bent from a single tube and welded to produce a seamless tension between a single bent tubular steel frame and a one-piece generous leather sling shell requiring no fasteners or screws. The leather, finished in a warm terra-cotta or persimmon tone, wraps the wide seat and back smoothly with subtle armrest cutouts. Saddle stitching runs along all edges of the leather panels, adding a tailored and artisanal quality. The chairs are sturdy with solid construction. The unique geometry allows the frame to flex slightly for optimal comfort. The chairs are in exceptional condition as seen in photos. Crafted in a mid-century Brazilian modernist style with French construction, the rare chairs are well-suited for a variety of spaces. The iconic chair design is housed in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. Sold as a pair. Each chair has a maker's label affixed to the seat. From an estate in San Francisco, CA.
