A striking, heavy antique brass floor easel featuring magnificent ornate Art Nouveau detailing. This stately standalone display stand is a favorite tool of high-end art galleries and luxury designers—perfect for showcasing large oil paintings, heavy framed portraits, historic books, or menus in a traditional library, office, or dining vignette.
Floor length easels, particularly those made of brass and featuring ornate designs, have been used for centuries to display artwork, books, or decorative plates. The Rococo and Baroque Revival styles, popular in the 18th and 19th centuries respectively, are characterized by elaborate ornamentation, asymmetry, and flowing, naturalistic forms, often seen in decorative arts and furniture. These styles were revived and reinterpreted throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, leading to many decorative items produced in these aesthetics.
Brass was a favored material for such decorative items due to its malleability, durability, and ability to be cast into intricate shapes. The detailed scrollwork and floral motifs visible on this easel are hallmarks of these decorative periods, designed to add elegance and a focal point to a display. Such easels were commonly found in homes of the affluent, used to showcase cherished artworks or valuable books.
