Etching on paper. Early 19th Century impression of this celebrated view by Piranesi. This architectural etching depicts the monumental Piazza and Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano, Rome. Executed with the artist’s characteristic mastery of perspective and atmospheric chiaroscuro, the composition presents an expansive urban panorama animated by figures, carts, travelers, and ruins, illustrating both the grandeur and vitality of eighteenth-century Rome. At the center rises the Lateran obelisk before the imposing façade of the basilica and adjoining papal buildings, rendered with remarkable precision and dramatic spatial depth. Piranesi’s celebrated ability to merge archaeological accuracy with theatrical vision is evident throughout the composition, from the intricate architectural detailing to the lively anecdotal scenes populating the foreground. This print belongs to the artist’s renowned Vedute di Roma series, the monumental body of work through which Piranesi established himself as the foremost interpreter of Rome’s ancient and contemporary magnificence. The etching demonstrates his sophisticated handling of line, tonal variation, and compositional scale, combining documentary observation with a distinctly Romantic sensibility. The plate bears the printed title and publication inscription in the lower margin. Condition: Visible age-related toning, foxing, and areas of surface wear and discoloration consistent with age. Margins and image generally preserved; overall presenting well for display. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
