This pair of French Empire Revival tazzas exemplifies the style and craftsmanship associated with the finest 19th-century decorative arts. Constructed in gilt bronze (ormolu) and polished black Belgian marble or slate, each piece combines architectural form with classical ornamentation, creating a striking display rooted in the Neoclassical tradition.
The shallow ormolu bowls are richly chased with leaf-and-dart borders, gadrooned detailing, and stylized laurel motifs. Rising dramatically from either side are sweeping acanthus-leaf handles, lending each tazza a sculptural presence while emphasizing the symmetry and balance characteristic of Empire design. The bowls are supported by finely cast bronze stems that rest upon substantial square pedestals of polished black stone. Encircling each base is a decorative ormolu border featuring the traditional rai de cœur (ray-of-heart) motif, further reinforcing their architectural character.
Crafted in France during the Second Empire period, circa 1860–1880, these tazzas reflect the enduring influence of Napoleonic design while showcasing the exceptional bronze casting and stonework for which Parisian bronziers were renowned. Originally intended as mantel garnitures, pieces such as these were often displayed alongside monumental figural mantel clocks to create an elegant and symmetrical focal point within a formal salon or drawing room.
Today, they remain equally compelling as standalone decorative objects. Their classical silhouette makes them ideal for flanking a mirror, anchoring a dining room console, or serving as vessels for floral arrangements. Whether displayed traditionally or incorporated into a contemporary interior, they bring architectural presence and historical depth to any setting.
The ormolu retains its original gilt surface with excellent color and luster, highlighting the crisp quality of the casting and chasing throughout. The metal exhibits minor age-related flyspecks and surface wear consistent with more than a century of careful use, adding to the authenticity and character of the pieces. The black marble bases remain beautifully preserved, displaying minor edge wear and small chips typical of antique stonework of this period.
