Carved in high relief and finished in a warm gilded surface, this matched pair of French wall sconces presents the exuberant vocabulary of the late Rococo: C- and S-scrolls, swept acanthus leaves, and a bold central cartouche framed by drapery and tied tassels. Each backplate is conceived as an armorial trophy, crowned by a coronet and centered with a shield carved with a heraldic beast—most plausibly a stag or hart shown in profile (passant) beneath a stylized tree—above a ribboned scroll that appears intended as a motto cartouche. Two curving candle arms with circular drip pans extend from the lower register, giving the composition a strong vertical silhouette while keeping the light sources balanced and architectural on the wall. The overall effect is that of a provincial château interior—decorative, ceremonial, and unmistakably aristocratic in tone—making the pair especially suitable for flanking a mirror, overmantel, or doorway in a traditional setting.
