The curved, balloon-shaped backrest with its openwork oval central panel appears clearly proportioned and aesthetically cohesive, without overloading the lines. Historical Context: from the mid-19th century onward, the chair type with a curved, balloon-shaped backrest was among the most common seating furniture in bourgeois homes in Central and Western Europe. In contrast to the heavier forms of the Empire and Biedermeier periods, the Louis Philippe style was characterized by lighter, more curved lines and a reduced use of ornamentation. Such chairs were predominantly produced in sets and used in dining rooms, parlors, and the "good room" (parlor). with the increasing mass production of furniture, walnut became a preferred material due to its ease of working and its calm, even grain. Features: Openwork oval central panel connected to the lower backrest frame by a curved bridge. Decorative brass nailhead trim along the seat edge. Design: The design follows the Louis Philippe style of the mid-19th century. Characteristic features include the continuously curved balloon backrest, the openwork oval central panel, and the forward-curving legs. The design emphasizes lines and proportions rather than flat ornamentation; the construction remains formally restrained and self-contained. Function: Formerly: originally used as a dining room or parlor chair, usually as part of a set, as part of a unified interior design. Today: usable as a single side or accent chair, for example, at a desk, in a hallway, or as additional seating. Dimensions: Height 89 cm × Width 42 cm × Depth 37 cm, seat height 46 cm. Material and Condition: Solid wood, walnut; upholstered seat with antique rose fabric cover. Well-preserved for its age, with a subtle patina and visible signs of wear. The seams in the upper backrest area are visible due to the design. The upholstery shows signs of wear. See less
