The Modernist fine art silkscreen print is published by Ives-Sillman, Inc., New Haven for The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Printed in The United States in 1971 by Sirocco Screenprints, New Haven, in a limited edition of 50 on the occasion of the exhibition. It features an artwork image by Albers titled " P-Blue ".

This is a rare opportunity for true Josef Albers and Modernism fans and collectors, as this coveted image fine art exhibition print is long out of print and very scarce to find. It is hand signed and dated in pencil by the artist " Albers '71 " in the right corner under the artwork image, hand titled and numbered " P.Blue 40/50 " in the left corner under the artwork image.

An example of this same print is held in the archive collection of The Museum of Modern Art New York, The National Gallery of Art Washington D.C., and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Josef Albers ( 1888 - 1976 ) was a German born artist and educator whose work, both in Europe and The United States formed the basis of Modern Art programs of The 20th Century. Albers was a student at The Bauhaus in 1920, later being invited by the founder Walter Gropius to become an educator at the school. There his students included established artists Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee.

In the 1930's Albers emigrated to The United States where he would become head of the new art school Black Mountain College, and later in the 1950's he became the head of the department of design at Yale University. His students in America included Robert Rauschenberg, Cy Twombly, Richard Anusziewicz, and Eva Hesse among others.

Accomplished as a designer, photographer, typographer, printmaker, and poet, Albers is best remembered for his work as an Abstract painter and an invaluable contributor as an art theorist of color theory. His is considered to be one of the most influential visual artists of The Twentieth Century. Artworks by Albers are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.

Josef and his wife Anni Albers went to The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York two days after they arrived in The United States in 1933. From the start, they loved the energy they felt there and were impressed by the size of the crowd. In 1971, Josef became the first living artist to be given a solo retrospective exhibition at The Met. They continued to visit the museum regularly until the end of Josef's life, on their visit in the autumn of 1975, they were particularly thrilled to have a preview of the new Islamic galleries.

This rare and important screen print was produced in tandem with the exhibition and commemorates the historic art event. The artwork " P-Blue " features Albers' Mitered Square, a signature motif that explores the relationship between gradient color and our perception of complex geometric structures. In " Mitered Squares " Albers offered a composition to interpret : Are we looking at a recess, with a dark center at the base, or are we looking at a structure with a darkened small square " roof " ? this work is a strong reminder of Albers' place as one of the most important practitioners of Minimalism and Hard-Edge Abstraction.

The rare out of print limited edition framed Modernist hand signed fine art silkscreen print measures 25 3/4" W X 34 3/8" H X 1 3/8" D, the print measures 21" W X 28 3/8" H.

It is expertly presented top mounted on an archival light cement gray conservation matt board, custom framed with UV protective plexiglass in a Contemporary Modern variegated light charcoal driftwood gray woodgrain style recessed detail matte finish metal frame molding, with an attached hanging wire on the reverse back side for easy wall installation.

It is in excellent " like new " condition. The print is in excellent " like new " very clean condition consistent with age, and very light signs of handling.
