This is an exquisite, authentic American Federal style Windsor arm chair, estimated to be from the late 18th century or early 19th century (1790-1815). Based on its craftsmanship, it's believed to have been made by an expert artisan, likely in New England. To help authenticate its origin and age and level of craftsmanship, it is characterized by the following:
* Bird cage/sack back style with a rectangular top rail and supporting spindles
* Oval spindle holes; clear cross-grain oval spindle shrinkage; small wooden wedge driven into top of spindle to lock it in place
* Arms continuous horizontal bend, with hand rests supported by canted spindles into seat
* Splayed bamboo-turned legs that are varied and hand-turned; leg joinery is wedged through-tenon joints, perpendicular to wood grain
* Solid single-piece plank seat with saddle contour; shield or oval front seat indicating it was made in New England (CT/RI/MA, not PA)
* profound honest wear across seat front edge and pristine top-side wear patterns
* highly visible chamfering (beveling) on seat edge profile which is exceptionally hand-carved
* It has its original finish, which was likely dark milk paint
* All parts are original to each other
* During this period, a mix of woods were typically used; seat is either pine or poplar; spindles, arms and stretchers are ash, elm or oak; legs & turnings are maple. This combination of materials contributed to their durability and lightweight design.

Two elements were restored, (1) the left rear leg below the stretcher has a split that was recently restored by an expert; a wire applied by a previous owner was left in place although is not necessary; (2) the front portion of the right side stretcher had some surface-only puppy chew marks and they have been filled and it has been stained to match. (see last 5 photos) Seat finish has its original deep patina and wear, adding to the chair's value. There is no wobbling of joinery throughout. Better-than-customary wear seen on legs. Small surface crack on side of right arm, that does not compromise its utility in any way (see photo). There is evidence of modern glue repair on underside leg joints, but it is not recent. less
