Signed Santa Clara Pueblo black pottery vase by acclaimed Native American potter Madeline Tafoya (1912–2002). This elegant hand-coiled vessel features a highly polished black finish with finely carved matte geometric decoration, showcasing the traditional craftsmanship for which Santa Clara pottery is celebrated.
The vase displays a graceful sculptural form with a rounded body and gently flared neck. Its deep black surface and subtle carved design exemplify the timeless aesthetic that made Santa Clara pottery one of the most sought-after traditions in Southwestern Native American art.
Madeline Tafoya was a highly respected Santa Clara Pueblo artisan and cousin of the renowned potter Margaret Tafoya. Active primarily between 1935 and 1970, she learned the art of pottery making from her grandmother and aunt and became known for her exceptional black and red pottery. During her distinguished career, she received numerous honors at the Santa Fe Indian Market, including the prestigious Governor's Award. Today, her work is represented in important Southwestern pottery collections and is highly regarded by collectors of Native American art.
