A wonderful example of Japanese Bizen ware from the 1970s. Features deep earthy tones of brown and red clay with a matte finish. A graceful shape with a slender, elongated neck. Artist signed at the bottom.
Bizen ware is a type of pottery produced in Okayama Prefecture, originating during the Kofun Period (mid 3rd century to 7th century). During the Kamakura period (1185-1333), brown pottery, as we know it today, began to be fired. The firing method allows sufficient oxygen to enter the kiln, resulting in a warm color. The natural beauty of the clay is highlighted, as the pieces are unglazed. No two pieces are alike, as the final color is left up to the kiln firing process.
