This hand-stitched commemorative sampler was made to celebrate the 200th anniversary of George Washington's birth in 1732, and is a wonderful survivor of that 1932 bicentennial moment. Worked in polychrome thread on linen, it is packed with patriotic imagery and heartfelt period sentiment.
"Born Feb. 22, 1732 at Wakefield" and "Died Dec. 14, 1799 at Mt. Vernon" bordering the piece top and bottom
"First in War; First in Peace; First in the Hearts of His Countrymen"
A charming cross-stitch rendering of Mount Vernon in red, green and blue
Washington's facsimile signature
His Farewell Address quote: "Observe Good Faith and Justice Towards All Nations; Cultivate Peace and Harmony with All"
Silhouette portrait medallions in blue oval frames
Delightful vignettes of "Reviewing Troops" and the "Inaugural Ball"
Beautiful decorative floral and geometric border
Frame & Condition:
Displayed in the original black wood frame (approximately 19×14"). The sampler has been re-mounted on acid-free board — the original mounting was acidic and beginning to stain the fabric, so this was done to protect and preserve the piece for future generations. The original period threads that secured the sampler to its backing have been carefully preserved on the verso with non-stick tape, keeping the history of the object intact. All original elements are present.
The linen has gentle honey-toned aging throughout — exactly what you'd expect and hope for in a 90+ year old textile.
