The console-to-dining table is one of mid-century design’s most intelligent solutions to the problem of domestic space — a piece that lives as a slim, elegant console against a wall and transforms, when needed, into a full dining surface capable of seating a serious gathering. This example executes that premise with exceptional design quality and a functional range that few comparable pieces can match: 21 inches deep as a console, 78 inches long with all three leaves in place.
The scalloped top edge is the piece’s defining design statement. Rather than the flat or simply rounded profiles that characterize most dining tables of the period, this top describes a dramatic sculpted wave along its long sides — a concave arc that gives the table a visual dynamism and formal sophistication entirely its own. It is the detail that elevates this from a well-made functional piece to something with genuine design ambition, and it rewards attention from every angle.
The flip-top mechanism is clean and precise — the top folds flat to the 21-inch console depth and opens to reveal the full dining surface, at which point all three removable leaves can be inserted to reach the full 78-inch length. Square tapered legs with original brass sabots at the feet add a note of refined material detail, and the shaped scalloped apron below the top continues the table’s commitment to considered design at every element.
At 21 inches this table lives against almost any wall without sacrifice. At 78 inches it seats a real crowd. That range, combined with the scalloped top’s sculptural presence, makes this one of the most versatile and visually distinguished vintage dining tables we have offered.
