Part of COASTAL COLLECTED — a six-part room series by June Hastings inspired by the warmth and charm of rooms near the water.
A charming 19th-century English occasional table featuring an oval top with a raised molded rim, giving it a subtle tray-like effect. The top is supported by a beautifully turned barley twist pedestal raised on a three-splay base with flattened bun feet. Crafted in fruitwood and mahogany-toned hardwoods, the table combines warm color, pleasing proportions, and the kind of hand-turned craftsmanship that has made barley twist furniture enduringly popular.
Compact in scale yet remarkably versatile, it works equally well as a drink table, tea table, lamp stand, or bedside accent. The oval top provides ample space for a book, cup of tea, or evening cocktail while maintaining a small footprint ideal for reading corners, apartments, and layered traditional interiors.
JUNE'S THOUGHTS
I love this little table. The barley twist column gives it a sculptural presence that draws your eye immediately, while the warm fruitwood finish beautifully highlights the turning. Had it been finished in a dark stain, much of that detail would simply disappear. I also appreciate how much character is packed into such a small footprint. The graceful tripod base keeps it visually light, while the raised rim around the top makes the whole piece feel both useful and decorative.

Surface wear, minor marks, and age-related imperfections present as expected in a 19th-century piece. At some point in its history, the pedestal column fractured and was improperly reglued. The table has since been professionally restored using a hardwood dowel reinforcement and proper adhesive, creating a repair that is substantially stronger and more stable than the earlier restoration. The repair is visible upon close inspection and is shown in the detailed photograph with arrow. The table is sturdy, stable, and ready for everyday use.
