The coqueta chair was designed by pete sans for bd barcelona in the late 1980s. First introduced around 1987–1988, it features a seat made from handwoven cane, suspended in a tubular stainless steel/chromed frame. A leather belt, visible along the underside, reinforces the structure. The cane seat is organically shaped and rests within the metal framework without touching the base, creating a suspended effect. The design received the prestigious adi-fad delta de oro award in 1988 for its innovation in form and construction. The chair reflects a functional sculptural approach and combines industrial materials with traditional craft techniques. Originally produced by bd barcelona, the coqueta demonstrates a balance between structure and material expression.pete sans, born jaime sans in barcelona in 1947, is a spanish designer known for his sculptural approach to furniture. Self-taught in design, he began his career in the 1970s in graphic arts and later transitioned into furniture and lighting. He collaborated with snark design before establishing his own practice in 1994. His most recognized works include the coqueta chair, lamparaprima lamp, and various table systems. Sans describes his work as “industrial sculpture,” blending minimal forms with technical precision. His pieces have been awarded internationally and are included in the permanent collection of the design museum of barcelona.
