the frame is constructed from sinuous brass wire in contrasting polished and blackened finishes — bosse's signature "black gold" technique — arranged into flowing curves that suggest an aquatic scene. Two cast fish in dark patinated brass swim through the composition in opposing directions, each modelled with characteristic surface detail. The original thermometer insert is in place and functional, with both c and f scales and intact blue indicator.
bosse collaborated with herta baller through the 1950s to produce a range of peculiar, decorative and modern small brass objects — hooks, mirrors, desk accessories, figurines — that remain among the most distinctive examples of viennese mid-century applied design. T
his collector's item combines sculptural quality with everyday function in a way that sum up postwar-modernist ideas and the zeitgeist at the time in vienna. Auböck and hagenauer as well as richard rohac produced modernist home decor in much the same vein. A lovely addition to any home.
