a polished brass heart frame supports two cast swallows in darkened patinated metal, facing one another across the thermometer — a quietly romantic composition that is entirely characteristic of bosse's ability to combine humour and formal elegance in a small functional object.

the original thermometer insert remains in place and reads both c and f scales, with intact blue indicator. Suspended from a fine brass chain. Bosse collaborated with herta baller through the 1950s to produce a range of peculiar, decorative and modern small brass objects — hooks, mirrors, desk accessories, figurines — that remain among the most distinctive examples of viennese mid-century applied design.

this collector's item combines sculptural quality with everyday function in a way that sums up postwar-modernist ideas and the zeitgeist at the time in vienna. Auböck, hagenauer and richard rohac produced modernist home decor in much the same vein.
