An antique dutch art deco armchair in oak and woven rush, made by an unknown dutch maker and likely produced in the netherlands during the 1920s. With its architectural wooden frame, curved armrests, vertical slatted back and handwoven seat, this early 20th-century armchair sits beautifully within the dutch art deco and amsterdam school design language.
origin: netherlands
period: 1920s
style: dutch art deco, amsterdam school influence
materials: oak, woven rush
dimensions: 59 w x 61 d x 91.5 h cm (23.2 w x 24 d x 36 h in)
seat height: 47 cm (18.5 in)
quantity: single armchair
the chair has a strong yet elegant presence, with gently curved arms, a tall framed back and a decorative central splat with carved vertical detailing. The woven rush seat adds warmth and texture, while the aged oak frame shows a rich patina developed over time. Its proportions feel architectural and restrained, with enough sculptural character to work as a statement chair, desk chair or quiet accent piece.
this type of dutch art deco furniture is closely connected to the amsterdam school period, where furniture often echoed architectural forms through expressive woodwork, strong silhouettes and crafted details. While the maker is not identified, the chair reflects the dutch early modern design tradition of the 1920s and 1930s, combining functionality with a distinct decorative rhythm.
condition
good antique condition with signs of age and use consistent with its period. The wooden frame shows visible patina, surface marks, scratches and wear throughout. There is a visible crack to the upper back/side support area, as shown in the photos. The woven rush seat shows age-related wear, variation in tone and some irregularities, but remains visually beautiful. Structurally suitable for normal use, with the natural imperfections expected from an early 20th-century piece.
