This is a fabulous neoclassical style china cabinet designed by Raymond Sabota for high-end American furniture maker Century Furniture. The 2-piece china cabinet features solid wood construction, richly grained bookmatched walnut veneer, high-contrast black lacquered trim, and solid polished brass hardware. A metal plaque inside the top drawer displays the Century brand.
The top of the china cabinet has a wide central display area flanked by two narrower display areas, all with mirrored glass backs, adjustable glass shelves with plate grooves, beveled glass doors, and built-in lighting. The two narrow display areas are topped with arched pediments with sunburst inlay and their glass doors are flanked by neoclassical ebonized columns with brass bases and capitols. The key style door pulls are backed with diamond shaped eschutcheons.
The bottom cabinet has a central stack of four wide dovetail jointed drawers with carved lion ring pulls, The drawers are flanked by two banded walnut paneled doors that open to reveal a spacious storage space with an adjustable shelf. Each door is accented with ebonized columns and diamond backed door pulls. The cabinet terminates in an architectural plinth base.
The late 20th century china cabinet is in good but not perfect vintage condition. It is impressive to behold, grand in stature and dignity. The cabinet is superbly constructed, very heavy, and solid as a rock. All drawers and doors open smoothly. Scratches on the top of the lower cabinet from moving the extremely heavy upper display. Wood and veneer losses on the corners and sides. Scattered scratches and dings. Please photos for more details about the condition of the cabinet.
The china cabinet measures 87.5” tall, 76” wide, and 20” deep. It separates into two parts for transport. The top display cabinet measures 57” tall, 76” wide, and 19” deep. The bottom cabinet measures 31.5” tall, 74.25” wide, and 20” deep.
