A disciplined study in volume and material contrast, this pair of Brazilian Modern armchairs attributed to Bertomeu exemplifies the architectural clarity that defined much of the country’s design output in the 1960s. The composition is anchored by monolithic side panels in richly figured Brazilian rosewood (jacarandá), whose continuous grain wraps the structure with a near cabinetmaker’s precision—transforming what could be read as mass into something visually fluid and controlled.
The silhouette is intentionally reductive: broad planar arms, a low horizontal seat line, and subtly tapered legs that lift the form just enough to introduce lightness without compromising presence. This tension—between weight and lift, enclosure and openness—is central to the piece’s success.
The upholstery has been executed in a warm ivory mohair, selected for its dense, refined pile and quiet luster. The tone carries soft cream and pale sand undertones, calibrated to sit harmoniously against the depth of the rosewood without contrast fatigue. The seat and back cushions are generously proportioned, with a slight overflow that softens the rigor of the wood shell while maintaining crisp tailoring. A restrained button tufting along the backrest introduces a subtle cadence without interrupting the overall geometry.
Fully restored, the rosewood has been brought to a satin-matte finish that emphasizes its natural veining and tonal variation—never glossy, preserving the material’s inherent depth. The upholstery is newly executed, with a focus on tension, alignment, and longevity.
A compelling example of Brazilian Modern seating where material intelligence and structural restraint converge—well suited for interiors that value sculptural presence without excess
