Exceptional gentleman’s chest from Tomlinson Furniture’s Sophisticate East collection, a line renowned for blending modern American craftsmanship with sophisticated Asian-inspired influences.

This striking example features the collection’s signature geometric checkerboard-pattern burlwood veneer, creating remarkable depth, movement, and visual interest across the drawer fronts. The dramatic contrast between the richly figured burl panels and surrounding walnut framework highlights the exceptional level of cabinetmaking and veneer artistry for which Tomlinson became known.

Tomlinson Furniture was founded in 1901 in High Point, NC and built a reputation for high end furniture and craftsmanship. The Sophisticate East line came in the late 1960s-60s and holds some of their most unique, and sought after case pieces. With only a few pieces integrating the checkered burlwood design.

This particular piece I have sanded the structure down to bare walnut, and carefully hand sanded the walnut veneer, sealed with dewaxed shellac, and meticulously stained and toned with custom mixed toner, and sealed in satin laquer. These pieces were made to last lifetimes, and I was happy to brighten it up a bit! See less
