From the estate of a British diplomat who divided his years between England and Nantucket. Acquired at house sale, Nantucket, MA. One of a number of English decorative and garden objects from the same collection.
The finial is one of the oldest forms in Western garden architecture — a terminal ornament designed to mark, punctuate, and draw the eye upward. This example, made in England around 1950, follows the classical vocabulary without apology: a tapering square plinth rising to a ribbed sphere, the whole resolved by a small ball finial at the crown. Three forms stacked in perfect hierarchy. Nothing extraneous.
The glaze is a deep, saturated malachite green — the color of moss on north-facing stone, of English walled gardens in August. It has the slight unevenness that hand-dipped glazework produces, pooling a touch darker in the molded channels of the sphere. In direct light it is nearly jewel-like. In shade it recedes to something quieter and older.
Finials of this type were made throughout the first half of the twentieth century for use atop gate piers, garden walls, potting shed rooflines, and conservatory steps. They were objects of modest practical intent that accumulated significance over time — absorbing weather, seasons, the particular atmosphere of the gardens they stood in. This one came to Nantucket with its owner, carrying whatever the English garden left on it.
