Nicolai Joseph Jacquin
(Dutch, 1727-1817)
A Dutch-born scientist who later lived in Paris and a professor of Botany and Chemistry and director of the botanical gardens of the University of Vienna. He produced a catalogue of all of the plants at Schonbrunn gardens. His skill caught the attention of the emperor Franz I of Austria who commissioned his plant collecting expiditions to the West Indies and South America.
Jacquin’s work, The Flora of Austria, is considered one of the most comprehensive collections of local Austrian flora. These four engravings come from Florae Austriacae Vol. V puplished from 1773-1778. The engravings are on chain-link paper and are hand-colored.
