A beautifully crafted vintage Chinese carved lacquer folding screen featuring an elegant lotus pond scene with colorful mandarin ducks, waterfowl, blooming lotus flowers, and lush foliage set against a rich black lacquer ground. The reverse side is also decorative, showcasing a serene bamboo and crane motif, allowing the screen to be displayed from either direction.
Unlike many decorative screens that are simply painted, the artwork on this piece is carved into the lacquer, creating depth, texture, and remarkable visual interest. Traditional Chinese symbolism is woven throughout the design: lotus flowers represent purity and abundance, mandarin ducks symbolize marital harmony and fidelity, while cranes and bamboo are associated with longevity, resilience, and good fortune.
The screen consists of four 16-inch hinged panels framed by a decorative floral border and stands 73 inches tall. A distinctive workshop mark depicting an auspicious sheep/goat emblem appears in the lower corner. Similar examples with different front scenes suggest production by a Chinese lacquer workshop during the mid-20th century.
