Here is a vintage Chinese Chinoiserie black lacquer nightstand, side cabinet dating to the mid-20th century. The cabinet is richly decorated with colorful figural landscape scenes and gilt detailing against a glossy black lacquer ground. Painted gilt bamboo motifs decorate the sides, while the top features a wonderful flowering bonsai composition in shades of red, green, purple and gold.
The front is accented by large engraved brass strap hinges and two ornate circular brass center medallions. Two doors open to reveal an interior storage compartment with three small drawers and side cubby, while a full-width drawer below provides additional storage. Raised on shaped feet, the cabinet is beautifully detailed.
At just over 24 inches high, the piece is an ideal size for use as a nightstand, end table or small accent cabinet. The combination of black lacquer, colorful painted decoration and elaborate brass hardware gives it a particularly decorative presence.
