This dramatic piece draws from the long tradition of Egyptian and classical revival furniture that reemerged across Europe and America during the 19th and 20th centuries, particularly following renewed fascination with ancient Egypt and archaeological discovery. The winged female supports recall caryatids and mythological guardian figures seen across Neoclassical and Empire design—architectural forms adapted into furniture to create pieces intended as much for display as function.
