This traditional Peruvian storytelling gourd, or mate burilado, reflects a craft practiced in Peru for over 4,000 years. Measuring 15 inches across and 8.5 inches high, it is an impressive example of Andean folk art, with enough surface area for remarkably detailed miniature scenes.
These gourds preserve historical events, traditions, and religious celebrations. Here, two side panels show key themes: Andean agricultural village life and a syncretic Catholic procession.
One densely carved panel shows a fenced corral with bulls, cattle, and llamas, surrounded by townspeople in traditional Andean dress. Above them, village musicians play flutes, panpipes, and drums. The background shows an orderly village with A-frame houses, shingled roofs, and cross-braced windows reminiscent of Mantaro Valley architecture in Peru’s central highlands.
Another panel depicts a religious procession carrying an arched altar (anda) with Christ on the cross, alongside a second litter bearing the Virgin Mary. Crowds of finely carved figures in wide-brimmed hats and woven shawls fill the plazas.
The top features a radiating geometric star filled with tiny floral and foliage designs. The bottom is left uncarved, highlighting the smooth, mottled natural shell.
It was likely made during the mid-20th-century folk art revival in Cochas Chico or Cochas Grande, near Huancayo in Peru’s central highlands. The artist hand-engraved these tiny scenes with a handmade iron chisel called a buril, using fine hatching without magnification. The dark lines were created in the Bajo Mantaro style by rubbing a paste of natural fat and charcoal or ichu soot into the incisions, leaving pigment in the grooves for strong contrast.
Signature/Maker’s mark: Nonexistent.
