This piece of embroidery was cut from a sleeve of an antique Chinese silk kimono. The detail photographs show examples of the Peking Knot, also known as Forbidden Stitch or Blind Knot. The Forbidden City (Imperial Palace) was the center of embroidery production in the Ming and Qing dynasties. Clothing, tapestries and table linens for the emperor were adorned with elaborate embroidery.
This framed tapestry works well in a room with blue and white detail in ceramics such as ginger jars, upholstery and Chinoiserie. The blue and white theme is a classic and looks fresh in a bright sun room or in a softly-lit study.
The workmanship is flawless and the design is exquisite. The subtle hues on a background of ivory silk work together beautifully.
