D60 side chair designed by jelle jelles for technische hogeschool delft in the netherlands 1960. This ultra-rare d60 chair is an outstanding example of postwar dutch architectural design thinking, born from an academic assignment at th delft. The brief was to design a chair with a spatial steel frame, using as few and as simple connection points as possible, all made from a single structural type. Jelle jelles, an architect with a precise and rational approach, answered this challenge with a design of striking clarity and restraint. The chair features a solid steel strip frame, minimal in appearance but remarkably strong in construction. All elements of the frame are bolted together without welding, creating a modular, easily dismountable structure that reflects an architectural mindset. The seat and back are made of natural white canvas, stretched over the frame with beautifully detailed stitching and tensioning straps. This upholstery not only provides functional comfort but also introduces a tactile softness against the rigor of the steel. A notable and elegant detail is the cylindrical backrest, upholstered in matching canvas and finished with black plastic end caps. Its round, soft form stands in deliberate contrast to the strict linear geometry of the frame and seat, demonstrating a refined balance between function and sculptural expression. The chair’s design clearly shows jelles’ awareness of international developments in modernism, with a nod to the works of poul kjærholm, yet it remains firmly rooted in his own architectural language. Only eight examples of this chair were ever made, making it an exceptional rarity. This specific piece comes from a set of six commissioned directly from jelle jelles in 1979 by the previous owner. The original prototype resides in the collection of th delft, underscoring the academic and historical importance of the design. The chair remains in superb original condition, showing a warm and honest patina from age and careful use, without notable damages or restorations. It is a true museum-quality piece that exemplifies dutch modernist rigor and architectural elegance, making it an extraordinary addition to any serious design collection.
